IRRIGATION MANAGEMENT WEBSITES

(1) International Water Management Institute (IWMI):

  • IWMI is one of the international agricultural research institutes supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
  • IWMI focuses on the sustainable use of land and water resources in agriculture. It develops, tests and promotes water management practices and policies suitable for small farmers.
  • Examples of IWMI programmes relevant to smallholder irrigation are:
  • low-cost drip irrigation systems in India
  • water management systems in South Africa
  • recharge and use of groundwater in poor areas
  • soil conservation methods on sloping lands
  • strategies for enhancing productivity of water use
  • IWMI issues a wide range of publications on irrigation management, water charges, water rights and institutional and technical innovations in land and water use.
  • IWMI has programmes in twenty-one countries of Africa and Asia. It has regional offices in India, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Thailand. It has sub-regional offices in China, Ghana, Kenya, Nepal, Senegal and Uzbekistan.

(2) International Network on Participatory Irrigation Management (INPIM)

  • INPIM is a non-profit organization with headquarters in Washington DC and national chapters in Albania, India, Indonesia and Pakistan.
  • INPIM produces a quarterly newsletter on participatory irrigation management, runs a consultant referral service and conducts training programmes on demand, usually in conjunction with FAO, World Bank or national irrigation institutions.
  • INPIM works with the World Bank's Economic Development Institute on water policy reforms, and with FAO's Land and Water Management Division on transfer of irrigation management experiences.
  • Membership of INPIM ( www.inpim.org) is open to any individual who is involved professionally in irrigation management and shares a commitment to exchange information and experience across national boundaries. Membership costs US$ 10 pa for individuals, US$ 200 for institutions.

(3) FAO Land and Water Development Division (LWDD)

  • The Water Resources Development and Management Service of LWDD has as its mission to promote efficient use and conservation of water resources for food security and sustainable agriculture.
  • The Service issues a wide range of publications and training manuals on irrigation and water management, which are available through the FAO Publications Division (publications-sales@fao.org).
