Guidance Notes on Responsible Business

DFID commissioned NRET to summarise what for many in government and elsewhere is a bewildering array of initiatives on responsible business, focusing on ones involving renewable natural resources’ management.

One of the attractions of these initiatives to international development agencies is if they bring additional resources for delivering developmental objectives. However, the nature of this added value, and indeed whether it is a realistic expectation, is often unclear.

This guidance documentation was commissioned by DFID’s Rural Livelihoods and Environment Division so that its Advisors can understand how responsible business relates to their work and the sustainable livelihoods agenda. Specifically it assists Advisors in four main ways:

1. Showing the common underlying themes of different approaches to responsible business

2. Highlighting the contribution different approaches to responsible business make to sustainable livelihoods objectives

3. Providing overviews of approaches in key renewable natural resources sub-sectors

4. Identifying key issues and possible action areas for RLED Advisors
