Before user acceptability can be tested
by households in Zimbabwe there is a legal requirement that DEs first
be approved for registration. Following the success of the project's
field trials in Zimbabwe from 1998 to 2000, a private company has
now made an application for temporary registration of Protect-It as
a grain protectant. It is hoped that the private sector in Tanzania
will also be keen to get involved following this first season field
trials. Awareness raising visits have been made to Monsanto, Mukpar
Ltd, Twiga Chemicals, Balton Tanzania Ltd and Tropical Pesticide Research
Institute (TPRI).
Participatory DE trials evaluating efficacy, cost, taste, cooking,
brewing and application user acceptability will begin in Zimbabwe
during the storage season 2003/2004 following successful temporary
registration of Protect-It there.
Communities were involved in evaluating the quality of grain stored
using the different grain protectants following the first season
storage trials in Tanzania during field days in April and May 2003.
During the 2003/2004 storage season Tanzanian farmers have initiated
their own storage trials with the objective of identifying the factors
that influence different groups of farmers in their assessment and
utilisation of grain storage protectants generally, and to assess
the DE technology in particular. |
